About Us

The National Honor Society was established in 1921 to recognize outstanding high school students. Under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson, principal of Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, a national honor society was organized. It has become a premier organization that is more than just an honor roll. The National Honor Society from its inception was regarded as a concrete way to promote high school academic standards, a means of ensuring the continuation of democracy and an instrument for the betterment of the individuals and the school.

The five major principles of the National Honor Society are: scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character. These characteristics are exemplified through our participation in and planning of community service projects, the leadership positions students hold, and striving to promote scholarship through our afterschool tutoring program.

The Marian Chapter of the National Honor Society has been part of the St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School for over 20 years. Today, the Marian Chapter of the National Honor Society is joined by the Damien Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. With almost 40 members in total, our chapters are among some of  the largest on Maui, participating and organizing a variety of community service projects throughout the school year that benefit those in our school, those in our community and those around the world.
